Biography

Prof Teng has been a pharmacist for more than 25 years and remains passionate in her roles as a pharmacist, educator and scholar. Prof Teng delights in mentoring students and young pharmacists. After completing her 2-year Clinical Pharmacy Fellowship at the University of Illinois in Chicago, she returned to NUS Pharmacy (her alma mater) in 2008 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. She was part of the team which set up the NUS Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program that enrolled its inaugural class in 2009. Prof Teng assumed Directorship of the PharmD program in 2018 and led the PharmD faculty members to revise the coursework curriculum to its current form (implemented since August 2019) with increased emphasis on developing advanced clinical competency, self-directed learning skills and critical thinking. The revised coursework curriculum adopted flipped-classroom, student-centered teaching-learning formats and is more amenable for part-time studies.

Prof Teng is a registered Specialist Pharmacist (Infectious Diseases). She was part of the team that set up the TTSH Antimicrobial Stewardship Program where she continues to maintain her practice. She was a research scholar at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) in 2013 and assumed a key role in the design and conduct of the first landmark randomised controlled trial on the application of rapid diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship for the management of bloodstream infections. Prof Teng continues to conduct research to bridge the gaps between knowledge, practice and optimal medication use for quality patient care.

Prof Teng also serves in multiple committees on the national level, including the Singapore Pharmacy Council and the Pharmacy Specialist Accreditation Board. She was President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (2011 to 2013) and conferred as fellow of PSS in 2023.

She says: “I am fortunate to be part of various teams that worked tirelessly to achieve significant progress in the training, development and practice of pharmacist for a better healthcare. I look forward to working even more closely with our staff members, students, alumni, and partners from Ministry of Health, industry, healthcare and other academic institutions. With strong collaborative network and collective leadership, we will continue to establish new frontiers in research, education and practice.”
