Healthcare in the Era of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

Background & Overview

The use of big data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) is set to transform many industries, including the healthcare sector. Along with the increasing digitization of our healthcare systems, massive amount of complex data is generated, which offers opportunities for big data analytics. Such investigations will be able to translate the data into real and actionable insights to healthcare practices, thus provide new understanding and ways of treating diseases, and improve overall individual and population health. Some of the issues that can be addressed by big data analytics include inefficiencies of healthcare systems, and potential adverse drug reactions. The application of AI in health analytics of data derived from digital devices may lead to innovative personalized health care.

The Department of Pharmacy at the National University of Singapore is organizing this introductory course on big data and AI with the aim to inform and enthuse healthcare professionals, clinical-scientists, researchers and students with the fundamentals and some applications of the subject. Harnessing the power of big data and AI has great potential in uncovering the underlining factors that can aid advancing healthcare practices so as to serve the patients better. No prior knowledge on data science is needed to benefit from this course. Participants will be able to network with our faculty as well as others who attend the course, thus seeding potential collaboration opportunities.

An Introductory Course to R with Hands-on Training for Healthcare Data Analytics

R is an open source statistical programme that is rapidly becoming the leading tool in data science and statistics. R is arguably the tool of choice in numerous industries because of its versatility and extensibility in solving data problems. Whether you are a heavy-duty number cruncher or an occasional / recreational data analyst, R will fit your needs.

R offers a full suite of functionalities in the form of libraries that offer healthcare researchers a variety of tools to interrogate their data. In this introductory workshop, the critical steps involved in importing, cleaning and preparing datasets for analysis in R with be demonstrated. An introduction to the graphing capabilities of R for visualizing relationships between variables to draw insights from the data will also be covered. Additionally, methods of performing statistical analyses to derive answers to research questions of interest will also be covered.

This workshop is intended for participants who have some prior experience analyzing data using any other statistical software or in Excel. No prior programming experience is necessary but installing R on your laptop prior to the session is required. More details on R installation will follow upon registration of the workshop.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

(a) Import datasets into R
(b) Clean and prepare datasets for analysis
(c) Visualize data via scatter plots
(d) Perform inferential statistical analysis
