PAYM Loves Red: Fit. Fun. Fruits. 2024 – Bringing inter-professionalism into services
Following up on the success of Fit. Fun. Fruits. (FFF) last year, the NUS Pharmaceutical Society (NUSPS) Inter-Professional Education Committee continued with this annual flagship event in collaboration with the Essential Medicines Committee from NUSPS, Project First Aid from the Nursing faculty and the Yew Tee Youth Network.

The event aimed to educate and empower migrant workers at Westlite Kranji Way, equipping them with the knowledge to maintain their health and manage any minor illness. It also offered an invaluable opportunity for student volunteers from both pharmacy and nursing to collaborate and learn from each other. They engaged with about 350 migrant workers, combining their diverse expertise and shared compassion to make a positive difference.
Several booths were set up to fully encompass the “Fit”, “Fun” and “Fruits” components. The student volunteers in the Blood Pressure (BP) and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement station offered simple health screening and lifestyle counselling to the migrant workers, giving them insight into their own health.

In addition, an interactive health talk station was set up where Nursing and Pharmacy students utilized their distinct expertise to educate migrant workers on managing pain and heat-related conditions. The Nursing students offered advice and demonstration of proper posture for lifting heavy objects while the Pharmacy students discussed some common over-the-counter medications that can effectively relieve minor muscle aches as well as healthy eating lifestyle. This year, a new mini card game was introduced atthe healthy eating booth to encourage migrant workers to combine various foods to create balance meals on their paper plate.

On top of that, a national element booth with traditional games such as five stones was set up to encourage culture sharing and inculcate a sense of belonging to the migrant workers. Upon completion of all the booths, the migrant workers would also receive a goodie bag with fruits such as apples and bananas to encourage healthy diet.
Beyond the benefits that was offered to the migrant workers, the student volunteers from different faculties also reflected their gratitude towards this opportunity to work with students from different healthcare faculties and contribute to the society. In particular, Essential Medicines committee volunteers were grateful for having a meaningful platform to practice a core aspect of pharmacy profession – health education – in a real-world context. The volunteers from Project First Aid also shared the same sentiment, expressing their appreciation towards the opportunity to collaborate and give back to the community in everyone’s own unique way. Khai Tjie, a year 3 Pharmacy student, also shared that he felt privileged for the chance to make a genuine impact on the migrant workers’ lives through improving their health literacy and awareness.

We are also grateful to the Yew Tee Youth Network for their crucial support throughout the event, as well as our sponsors including Cloversoft, Anywheel, 5-Hour Energy and UNILAB for their support in preparing the goodie bags. We trust that all attendees found the event meaningful and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our upcoming activities!
