Learning beyond the curriculum – a visit to Hyphens Pharma organized by NUSPS

NUS Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science students had the privilege of visiting Hyphens Pharma on 22 September 2022 for the 1st ever industrial site visit since the COVID-19 pandemic, organised by the NUS Pharmaceutical Society (NUSPS) Marketing and Public relations, and Academic Committee.

The very fruitful and insightful visit started off with an opening address delivered by the Chief Operating Officer, Mr Yann Marche. Ms Sharon Lee (Senior Corporate Communications Executive) then shared more about Hyphens and her products, and how Hyphens has evolved throughout the years and acquired both Pan-Malayan Pharmaceuticals and Ocean Health. Following that, Ms Ho Hui Ting (Marketing and Product Manager) gave a guided facility tour of the entire Hyphens office as well as the attached warehouse. For many students, this was their first ever experience visiting a warehouse and even getting a chance to step into the cold room.

The facility tour ended with a final sharing session by Mr Marshall Liu on the new DocMed Technology and WellAway, Singapore’s first e-pharmacy registered under the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). At the end, everyone gathered for a lunch networking session kindly organised by Hyphens. It was an insightful and fun-filled lunch where students had the opportunity to interact and network with the friendly and inspiring staff from Hyphens.

“Fufilling”, “Eye-opening”, “Very fun” and “Fruitful” – these are a few words that the students used to sum up this industrial site visit. Here are some words from our participants:

“The industrial visit was an interesting experience as we got to tour around the facility and get a better understanding of the different products from Hyphens Pharma. I enjoyed the lunch networking session at the end as I got to learn more about the journeys of the mentors and receive valuable advice! Thank you for this opportunity and exposure to the pharmaceutical industry.”

          – Toh Li Ying, Year 4 Pharmacy

“It was a very insightful experience that provided us with a glimpse into the operations of a pharmaceutical company and also future potential prospects for pharmacists! I particularly enjoyed the facility tour that allowed us to see what goes behind the scene in quality control processes from product packaging to product storage 🙂 Best takeaway for me is to have an open mind in exploring the opportunities out there as there is much more to what pharmacists can do to contribute to the healthcare sector!!”

          – Koh Jia Yi, Year 3 Pharmacy

“I really enjoyed the visit! Everyone there was really friendly and I liked the flow of events throughout the entire session. I particularly enjoyed touring the Cold Room! It was something that I’ve never seen in person before and was a really interesting experience. My best takeaway was all the things I’ve learned about the pharmaceutical industry while chatting with the people who work there!”

          – Raden Lim, Year 2 Pharmaceutical Science

The organizing committee is grateful to Hyphens Pharma for hosting this visit and glad that students benefitted from the session. Do follow NUSPS telegram channel (https://t.me/nusps) to receive news on upcoming site visits!
