The Certificate of Essential Therapeutics in Clinical Pharmacy is designed to enhance the participant’s core knowledge and understanding of pharmacotherapeutics and integrate these with acquired problem-solving skills to provide effective medication therapy management to patients. Participants should have a strong foundation in pharmacology and therapeutics through prior completion of a Bachelor degree in Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, or equivalent. The programme is taught using a blended learning approach to allow students to access and review therapeutic content at their own pace, then receive face-to-face guidance in applying this knowledge and understanding to patient cases during the final onsite week of the programme at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Kent Ridge Campus of the National University of Singapore. Ultimately, the goal of the programme is to develop a participant’s ability to provide pharmaceutical care through application of pharmacotherapeutic principles to evaluation of patients with selected disease states.
Programme Outcomes:
At the end of this programme, students should be able to:
Programme Eligibility:
Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, or equivalent degree
The programme consists of self-study modules and a live Immersion & Exam Week.
The self-study modules of suggested readings and online lectures aim to deepen the learner’s understanding of specific disease states and the management of drug related problems (DRPs) commonly encountered in pharmacy practice. Topics are sequenced within modules organized by clinical discipline. Online lectures reinforce the pathophysiologic and pharmacotherapeutic issues required to identify and solve actual and potential DRPs.
The Immersion and Exam (I&E) Week takes place on the NUS campus in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will be held in end July/early August. Daily collaborative learning workshops will utilize team-based learning to allow facilitated application of the completed individual study. Collaborative learning occurs when students learn from and with each other, and here at NUS this is fostered by structured team-based learning where students will complete an individual readiness assessment then a team assessment to ensure everyone fully comprehends the pharmacotherapeutic principles, then the team of students will work together to apply their skills in identifying DRPs and developing care plans to patient case scenarios. These scenarios will give learners opportunity to demonstrate their therapeutic knowledge and problem-solving skills to not only create but also justify care plans with considerations of efficacy, safety, cost and/or convenience. There will be one case per day structured around a multimorbid patient, allowing participants to apply knowledge of multiple disease states during one session. A final closed-book assessment will be administered on the last day of the I&E Week. The participant will have 90 minutes to complete 60 application case-based multiple choice/multiple response questions.
