INSPIRxE AY25/26 Fireside Chat: An Evening of Career-shaping Insights

The fifth run of the INSPIRxE Mentorship Programme marked a new milestone with an inaugural Fireside Chat featuring two of its esteemed mentors, Ms Evonne Fouesnant and Ms Cheong Yee Yin. Held on the evening of 23 January 2026, the session brought together 30 Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science students from years 2 to 4 for an intimate and engaging discussion, where the mentors generously shared their experiences and insights on personal branding and job hunting, topics that resonated with many undergraduates.

The evening commenced with short sharings by both mentors. Ms Evonne dove deep into her career journey, sharing candidly about her experiences across her numerous roles and reflections at each juncture. She followed up with pertinent topics and lessons applicable to students, using real stories to emphasise the importance of emotional and communication intelligence, and how we can continue to value-add in the current age of AI.

Ms Yee Yin kept the energy up with her sharing, using an analogy and engaging slides on selling television sets to vividly illustrate lessons on personal branding, effective communication, and approaching new challenges.

This was followed by a conversational Fireside Chat segment, which offered no shortage of practical advice applicable from long before the job application phase through to career progression. Major topics discussed included what a personal brand means, how to be proactive throughout the job application process, and the importance of networking and visibility. Attendees came prepared with thoughtful questions, contributing to lively and meaningful exchanges. Many also stayed back after the session for further conversations with the mentors, a clear reflection of the engagement and interest sparked that evening.

We are glad that this Fireside Chat proved to be a meaningful learning opportunity, with many of our student attendees gaining valuable takeaways. Selected reflections from the session are shared below, do click to read the full reflections.

The INSPIRxE Committee would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ms Evonne and Ms Yee Yin for their patient guidance throughout the organisation of this event. As this was both our first Fireside Chat and the programme’s inaugural one, the lack of prior reference made it challenging to plan an experience that would genuinely benefit our peers, particularly when translating broad topics such as personal branding and job hunting into actionable discussions for students.

Navigating these challenges proved to be a valuable experience for the committee. Through the process, we learned many important lessons, including the importance of critically evaluating and scoping our questions to be more focused, and gaining hands-on experience moderating a Q&A-style discussion. These learnings would not have been possible without our mentors’ constructive feedback and generosity.

We thank Ms Evonne and Ms Yee Yin again for setting aside time to guide our curious and eager student attendees despite their busy commitments.
